Cunard's Queen Elizabeth Floated Out in Historic Ceremony |
Cunard president Peter Shanks looks on this morning as Florence Farmer cuts the cord to break a bottle of Italian prossecco against the hull of Queen Elizabeth, signaling that the valves in the drydock should be turned letting water flood in and meet the ship's hull for the first time. Mrs. Farmer is the widow of Willie Farmer who served Cunard from 1938 to 1979 as Chief Engineer aboard the first Queen Elizabeth and then Queen Elizabeth 2.
The liner, which is a sister to Queen Victoria, is shown in the drydock just prior to it being flooded this morning.
